Definition of Political Science, It is very difficult to give a precise definition of political science. Political scientists have defined political science from different perspectives. Such as -

[1] traditional definition,

 [2] modern definition and

 [3] Marxist definition.

[1] Traditional or former definition is

i. State-centered definition: The traditional or former definition of political science is basically state-centric. The structure and functions of the state institutions, the relationship of the state with the state institutions, etc. are predominant in the traditional definition. That is why the traditional definition of political science is called institutional or state-centric definition. According to Gatel, political science is the discussion of the past, present and future of the state .  Bluntsley said ,"Political science is the science of the state," Garner's statement is that the beginning and end of political science is about the state.

ii. Government-centric definition: Silly, Caitlin and other political scientists have defined political science as something which conducts research on government.

iii. State and Government Definition: According to Professor Gilchrist, political science discusses state and government. Paul, a French political scientist, says that the branch of sociology that deals with the foundations and government of the state is called political science.

 [2] Modern Definition:

Modern political scientists have given prominence to the behavior of individuals and groups in the early twentieth century, rejecting the trend of state-centered discourse. They are of the opinion that if political science is confined to the discussion of the state and its institutions, the full identity of political life will not be found. According to them, political science would become unrealistic if the political aspect was separated from other aspects of society. According to the behaviorist political scientist David Easton, the discussion of the authoritative distribution of value is political science.

Robert Dall and Laswell sought to establish political power as the subject of political science.

According to Laswell, political science is the discussion and analysis of society's influences and influencers.

According to Alan Ball, political science is a subject that deals with the conflicts and disputes between members of society.

 [3] Marxist definition :

According to Marxist political scientists, political science is the analysis of class relations and class struggle in society. Marxist theory takes a completely different view of the origin and nature of the state Explained.

From the Marxist point of view, the discussion of political science would be considered incomplete if it were discussed in isolation from the economic system of society.  Economics - Marxism claims that the discussion of neutral politics is not scientific.  Finally, to suggest an acceptable definition of political science, political science is a branch of sociology that analysed theories, regimes, political systems, political power and behaviour, international relations, international law and organisations, etc. through scientific reviews.

The reason for calling political science a progressive science is that, according to Bryce, although political science is an incomplete science, its scope is increasingly centred on the political behaviour of progressive people in a changed world, and it has become much easier to analyses it in a scientific way.  That is why Lord Bryce called political science 'progressive science'.
